Fish Bits

If you’re wandering through Bentley, Doncaster, and suddenly crave a proper British bite, Fish Bits is the little gem tucked away at 35 High St that might just surprise you. It's not your typical dine-in spot, but rather a takeaway hub for locals who know their chips and cod inside out. Despite the absence of dine-in seating and wheelchair-accessible seating, this place has earned its reputation through food that speaks louder than its footprint.

What sets Fish Bits apart from the usual fish and chip shops is how it balances the classics with a comforting homemade feel. One standout that keeps popping up in local chatter is their Cod Fish Cake & Chips-crispy on the outside, flaky and flavorful on the inside, served over golden, chunky chips that still carry that fresh-out-of-the-fryer heat. For those who like to personalize their chip experience, the Curry Sauce, Mushy Peas, and Baked Beans are not just sides-they’re the real deal. Each one complements the mains with a bit of tradition and warmth.

Now, let’s talk about convenience. Fish Bits caters brilliantly to the quick-lunch crowd. They specialize in quick bites, and it shows in their efficient service. Whether you’re grabbing something during a work break or picking up dinner for the family, their takeaway and delivery services keep things running smoothly. The option for no-contact delivery is especially handy, offering safety without compromising quality. It's ideal for those who want a fuss-free yet flavorful meal without the wait or the queue.

Despite being focused on takeaway, there’s still care in the packaging-no soggy chips or mess on arrival, even when ordering via delivery. That's a small but significant detail that many places often overlook, but Fish Bits gets it right consistently. Plus, lunch seems to be their prime time. Local workers, students, and even passersby find it a dependable stop for a hot, hearty lunch that doesn’t break the bank.

The vibe here is casual, almost nostalgic. Think of it as that familiar chippy where the smell of fried batter greets you before you open the door-or, in this case, before the delivery bag is even fully unzipped. While it doesn’t offer seating or a dine-in experience, the food does enough to bring people back again and again. It’s that reliable taste of comfort that doesn’t need the frills.

When it comes to alternatives in the area, sure, you’ll find other fish and chip shops, but Fish Bits has carved its niche through consistency and taste. The menu isn’t overwhelmingly long, which is a good thing-it means they focus on what they do best, and that focus pays off. For example, the Curry Sauce has just the right balance of spice and sweetness-not too thick, not too watery-making it an easy favorite to pair with just about anything on the menu.

If you’re someone who judges a fish and chip shop by its chips (as you should), the ones here don’t disappoint. They’ve got that soft, fluffy interior with a crispy shell that holds its own under sauces, yet never feels greasy. Pair that with one of their hearty fish cakes, and you’ve got a winning combo that delivers on both portion and flavor.

Whether you're a Bentley local or just swinging through Doncaster, Fish Bits is that dependable, no-nonsense stop for a classic British lunch. It’s quick, it’s tasty, and it delivers-literally.

Excellent chippy - the chips are delicious and fish properly cooked - no floury soggy batter and the fish itself flaky - they also invariably have haddock which we prefer to cod, but it is always worth ringing and placing your order - has worked very well during the Covid pandemic - no queues, quick service - hand sanitiser provided at the door and payment by card. My only complaint is that there is no delivery service - as a disabled customer I would find that a definite bonus!
